What's the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is profit divided by cost, while margin is profit divided by selling price. A 50% markup on a £60 item is a £30 profit and a £90 price, which is only a 33.3% margin — they are never the same number.

How do I find the price from a target margin?

Divide the cost by (1 minus margin/100). For example, a £60 cost with a 30% target margin gives £60 ÷ 0.70 = £85.71. This calculator does it for you.
