It's the number of units (or amount of revenue) at which total sales exactly cover total costs — no profit, no loss. Each unit sold beyond it contributes to profit.

What is contribution margin?

It's the selling price minus the variable cost per unit — the amount each sale contributes towards covering fixed costs and then profit. Break-even units equal fixed costs divided by contribution margin.
