How do I find a file by name in Linux?

Use find . -name "*.log" to search the current directory and everything below it for files matching a pattern. To search file contents instead, use grep -r "text" . to scan recursively.

What does chmod 644 mean?

It sets read and write for the file owner, and read-only for the group and everyone else. The three digits are octal permission bits for owner, group and others.
