One UK unit is 10 ml of pure alcohol. Units equal the volume in ml times the ABV percentage divided by 1000. For example, a 568 ml pint at 4% ABV is 568 × 4 ÷ 1000 = 2.3 units.

How does that relate to US standard drinks?

A US standard drink contains 14 grams of pure alcohol. We convert from millilitres of ethanol using a density of 0.789 g/ml, so one UK unit (about 7.9 g) is roughly 0.56 US standard drinks.
